Name of the Game

Well it's been two months since I've last written, yikes. As scary as the first few weeks were, and as unpreapred as I was, the past month I've been really thrown for a loop. I might've not mentioned it earlier as it would have come out as arrogant but Jack was "sleeping through the night" 11p-7a at a few weeks old. I wish I had written it down but I'm guessing three or four weeks? Before that we were waking him up once in the night, per the Doctor's instructions, in order to make sure he fed every four hours. Needless to say we could not comprehend how spoiled we were.

Well, four months hit us like a ton of bricks. We had read and were told that after three months you really need to begin to transition them to an earlier bed time (6p-8p) so we gave in and for a week or two it was just another adjustment. On the positive side, my husband & I finally had a relaxing evening, alone. However, waking up around 3a for a feeding (same amount of hours he had done before) was never very nice but again on the positive side, he would basically nurse back to sleep until 7am and we'd let him sleep that time in bed with us which was always a treat. Somewhere around four months he also decided that he wanted to also wake up between 12-1a. We had typically been asleep for an hour or two at this point and in our disarray sometimes fed him:/ Huge mistakes were made. More bricks. Sleep Regression lives.

The rest of the bricks were both within & outside of our control. He got his four month vaccines (horrible), he got his first cold (dryest yet wettest cough + tearfully sad runny nose), his first tooth (bottom, stage right) and we took him to Fire Island for memorial day to live in a basement for a few days with 10 close friends & family... Somewhere along the way naps seemed to fall out of existence. There are sadly more mistakes we made that are too painful to relive but to mention a few: I pretended to be a laid back mom like my oldest sister and began nursing him on the fly if he was fussy or tired. We - my husband, myself & adorable Gigi (my mom) - all enjoyed napping WITH him on us and he obviously slept longer which we let go on way too long. Lastly, we're new parents. We freak out that everything horrible is likely happening to us and we're second guessing ourselves every step of the way. Does he need solids? Is he over stimulated? Does he need to be held right away or sleep trained? What is sleep training? This last part shall be for the next post as jury's still out!
